Great article : Re:”this can lead to much better response rates than in print media” – probably the main advantage is much more MEASURABLE response rates, that can help with refining successive campaigns.

Hello you are absolutely right about the importance of getting a backlink from an important trade authority. We have a site at and we sell promotional calendars and we managed to obtain a backink from one of the major calendar manufacturers and it certainly boosted our search engine ranking.

There are certainly more opportunities for small businesses to achieve more with online promotion than in traditional media. It can be much more cost effective and only really takes that precious resource of time!

Its just a shame that BT puts no follows on all their backlinks – so they are pretty worthless to businesses.

this all great! but I’ll agree with John, “nofollow” links = useless

Thanks for the article. Your Why section is great, your How section is okay, but I would also have liked to have seen a Where section with some URLs.
and… I agree with the others about the nofollow.

Spot on PR advice. If anyone is looking for a decent online/digital PR agency, can I recommend two agencies:
1. In the South http://www.33-digital.com/ and
2. In the North http://www.umpf.co.uk/ (disclaimer: the latter is my agency).

Great article and really useful tips. Thanks. But what would really help would be more information on research. What is the best way to find the best and most effective bloggers in any particular field? The ones who really lead opinion and who are read, rather than the many who are not?
Thanks,
Stuart

All very sound and useful advice.. Thanks. As a small business the social networking side needs regular attention, so my advise is keep at it. As you can imagine in our sector of recruitment where there simply aren’t the amount of jobs currently on offer, keeping your profile high is vital.

This is all great. If you are a business owner or manager then you can also save time by outsourcing your online PR and social media marketing to a company like mine – London Digital PR.

Doing it well and thoroughly takes time, effort and persistence.

Is there a danger that we will all disappear in a vortex of circular self-promotion…??
But hey, it works, only if you’re prepared to invest the time…
