Who rules the social web?

Posted by Bian Salins

15th October 2009 in Tradespace gossip

Andy from bigmouthmedia sent me this interesting piece of visual stats yesterday. It seems, when it comes to the social web, ‘chicks rule’!

It’s not surprising that when it comes to the Internet, the genders differ. After all, ‘Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus’ right?

According to the stats, social networks like YoutTube and LinkedIn are seeing a 50 -50 balance in terms of gender usage but look further down the line at the usage of Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and Myspace and the ruling is simple, women are using and engaging with the social web more than ever.

Stereotypically, we women are known to be the more social gender and web 2.0 is all about being social – so no surprise there.

But, what is interesting is that it also shows that women are using the Internet for a variety of things.
In my recent post, I quoted research from ComScore stating that women were splashing their cash on buying kids toys, cosmetics, fragrances and food. Combine that with usage of social media and it seems that women spend more time shopping online, engaging online and yes, as our mumpreneur article shows, even selling online.

Interestingly, with the equal usage on YouTube and LinkedIn, you could also conclude that men are more selective when it comes to the social networks they use while women tend to adopt a plethora of networks to engage with. If this is so, could it be that we women are spreading ourselves too thinly (especially if you put this in the business perspective)? Only time will tell.

Even if we are, there are few things we can glean from the gender differences online.

  1. If your target market is women and you’re on a social network like BT Tradespace then, you’re in the right place.
  2. We’re going to see more innovation on the web steered towards capitalising on women’s usage of the web.
  3. Finally, if you wanted to work data like this to your advantage as a business, you need to use different strategies when selling to the different genders. Time, place and method of communication being key to the results you get.

Do you agree with stats? What social networks are you on? Let us know by leaving a comment!

Dan Wilson: news round up

Some September Links…

My September links have a rather a ‘back to school’ feel about them. There’s always plenty to read and learn. So eyes down and look in.

I don’t think that the importance and value of understanding how your website and online marketing is performing can be overstated. Having clear numbers and demonstrable results is vital if you’re going to get your money’s worth and replicate success. That’s why this new service from Google is of particular interest. Google Internet Stats is the perfect complement to Google Analytics and helps you contextualize your own numbers in the broader industry landscape.

As you’ll probably know, one of the key aspects of SEO is building inward links to your website. This useful article explains how you can do just that using social media.

If you’re stumped for ideas on where you could be branching out to next, you need to check out this list of social media sites for entrepreneurs. It’s skewed to readers Stateside, but there are loads of useful suggestions.
I like these 7 Tips for entrepreneurs from Trevor Ginn. Simple, clear and useful. I like this point in particular: To be successful does not require a novel idea, just a good idea expertly executed.

And let’s close with good news from New Media Age. eMarketer predict that ecommerce is still set to grow up to 2013 when half of all shoppers will be spending some of their cash on the web. Prepare for growth!

Fishing where the fish are

Posted by Bian Salins

11th September 2009 in Tips & tricks

I was recently talking to a Tradespacer who had set up a Tradespace account but forgotten about it. In the process of convincing her to take up social media to market her business, she said ‘that’s all great Bian but I don’t want to have a big bang approach, so I’ll just do it in bite-sized chunks.’

The thing about social media is that it’s about spreading your net as far and as wide as you can.

Think about this for a second. If you were to go fishing in the sea/ocean – would you rather spread your net out and catch as many fish as you can or would you arm yourself with one fishing rod and hope for the best? It’s a no brainer.

You could take up blogging, learn the art of how to have a successful blog but if you don’t tweet out your blogs or promote that blog via routes like the communities – then people won’t ever hear of your blog. Or, if you take up Twittering with out a blog, you could post random comments on ‘having a cuppa’ and ‘reading interesting article/s’ but how to you keep it focussed and draw it back to get returns for your business?

I often get gip for talking so much about Twitter on BT Tradespace from the folks here, but the reason I do it is because I think the two work brilliantly together. It’s all part of spreading that presence, opening routes, interlinking your profiles and gaining visibility. Also, BT Tradespace is more than just another social network.

We’re passionate about social media as a channel and about helping you get success for your business through this medium.

Social media for business is one great open sea? Are you fishing where the fish are armed with a fishing rod or a strong, wide fishing net?
